"Looking at the
image, I in fact remember having seen such a car in Seafoam Green a
few years ago in our city. It was lying in somebody's driveway,
Only it didn't look like anybody was using it -- tyres deflated,
tail lights broken, and a fair layer of dust.
"Anyway, a
little history -- my love for the the '59 Chevy all started when my
Dad bought me a little toy model of a '59 Impala in two tone red &
white (I still have half of it in our attic), when I was a kid.
If I was fascinated by those miniature fins & cat eye tail lights
you can imagine how much I have been by the real ones!! Anyway, as
agreed, I'm sending you
a picture of a
59 Chevy 4-door sedan as an attachment to
this message. It's not mentioned so, but I'm positive it's a
Bel Air (editor's note: The trim level indicates the car is
an Impala, but the most important part is that it's still a `59!).
It also seems to be a personal import car, as it's a left hand drive
one (that's actually the sign "Left Hand Drive" painted in red on
its rear bumper). Actually, all American cars after 1955 were
personal import ones. Although the Government of India had banned
whole imports of cars, people who could afford it could legally
import them personally into India. Although most of these cars
remained left-hand drive, a few were converted to RHD. But, as
a rule, LHD cars, such as this one, had to have the sign "Left Hand
Drive" painted on the rear, for road safety.
This car
here, a six cylinder one, was put up for sale in "Auto India" a few
months ago. It's located in Mysore, Karnataka State, South India.
I know the clarity isn't really perfect, but since I don't have a
scanner, I had to get it done outside. I will try and send you more
and better pictures of '59 Chevys if I find any in future." |
